Quizzes

FALL 2014

Quizzes are based either on documentaries or readings assigned in advanced. For each quiz, students will have to watch one documentary or read an article link to this page. Below students will find a list of films and scholar articles they will need to watch or rad before taking each quiz. Students can take notes and bring them in for the day of the quiz.

SPRING/WINTER 2014

6 Quizzes (5% each quiz) = 30%

Quizzes are based on documentaries assigned in advanced. For each quiz, students will have to watch one documentary or video. Below students will find a list of documentaries and videos they will need to watch before taking each quiz. Students can take notes and bring them in for the day of the quiz.

Quiz #1 (Tuesday, January 14th):

First of all, in order to have a broad view of how Latin American pre-Columbian cultures understood the world and nature, students will need to watch the following documentary:

1) The Botany of Desire, this is a PBS documentary based on the book written by Michael Pollan: Botany of Desire. The documentary contains an introduction and 4 chapters.

From this documentary, students will need to watch and take notes of the following chapters “Introduction” and the “Case of Potato” (chapter 4). Bring your notes to the day of the quiz!

Quiz #2 (Tuesday, January 21st):

2) Cracking the Maya Code, this is a PBS documentary based on 6 chapters (10 mins each one). This documentary deals with one of the sacred books written by the Maya civilization, we are talking about the Popol Vuh found in the city of Quiché (Guatemala).

From this documentary, students will need to watch and take notes of the entire documentary. Bring your notes to the day of the quiz!

Quiz #3 (Tuesday, February 4th):

3) The Lost Pyramids of Caral. This is a BBC documentary and it contains 5 chapters (15 to 20 mins each one). Students may not need to log in into a “youtube” account in order to watch the 5 chapters.

From this documentary, students will need to watch and take notes of the entire documentary. Bring your notes to the day of the quiz!

Quiz #4 (Tuesday, February 11th):

4) Machu Picchu Decoded. This is National Geographic documentary and it contains 4 chapters (15 mins each).

From this documentary, students will need to watch and take notes of the entire documentary. Bring your notes to the day of the quiz!

Quiz #5 (Tuesday, February 18th):

5) When Worlds Collide. This is a PBS documentary of 1 hour and 26 minutes length. From this documentary, students will need to watch and take notes of the entire documentary. Bring your notes to the day of the quiz!

Quiz #6 (Tuesday, March 11th):

6) Guns, Germs and Steel. This is a PBS documentary of 2 hour length. You can click here to go to its main page.

From this documentary, students will need to watch and take notes of the entire documentary. Bring your notes to the day of the quiz!

FOR EXTRA CREDIT: I LEFT AT THE LIBRARY (SF library) FILMS YOU CAN WATCH, AND THEN WRITE A REPORT PAPER (300 words [double space]. Ask a librarian for the HUM2461 list of films and choose no more than 5 films. Another detour towards a good grade.

Aztec Massacre This is a PBS documentary of 53 minutes length.

Mexico & Peru: The Black Grandma in the Closet This is another PBS documentary of about 54-minute length.

Latin American Revolutions This particular video is interesting because it gives you a fast review on colonialism and independence in Latin America.
